SHORERIVERS HOSTS SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY CONVENING
ShoreRivers recently hosted its first Social and Environmental Justice Community Convening, bringing together a variety of organizations working on issues including environmental health, youth development, immigration, and justice. In a day filled with music, food, and good conversation, 11 organizations learned about one another, identified shared values, and brainstormed ways to collaborate to build the future Eastern Shore we want to live in together. Relationships built at this Convening will help ShoreRivers better understand community needs, activate River-Friendly Yards native planting projects, and collaborate on grant proposals to bring more resources to achieve our shared goals of healthy communities and waterways.
First Friday celebrates KCHS seniors, features school events
This month's First Friday in Chestertown has a Kent County Public Schools theme, with a downtown celebration of seniors, an exhibition of student artwork and special events at H.H. Garnet Elementary School. The Kent County High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association has partnered with the Downtown Chestertown Association to recognize the Class of 2022. For First Friday, May 6, High Street will be closed between Cross Street and Spring Avenue from 5 to 7 p.m. to bring the community together to celebrate Kent County High School's graduating class.
Jamie Peace ‘93 to Deliver Graduation Address at Kent School
Jamie Peace was the Student Government Association President when he graduated from Kent School in 1993. Jamie returned to speak at Kent School after he came home from deployment in Afghanistan. The June 8, 2022 Graduation ceremony will mark his second appearance addressing the Kent School community since his own Graduation.
KCHS students take second in computer competition at SU
A team of Kent County High School students placed second overall in the Eastern Shore High School Computer Competition. The Eastern Shore High School Computer Competition was held Wednesday, March 30 at Salisbury University, with eight teams competing. Each team consisted of three students. Kent County High School's Eddie Blevins, Christopher Hinton and Samuel Peregoy took second place honors as a team. Hinton also came in third overall in individual rankings.
Kent School Students Raise Funds for Ukrainian Refugees
Thursday, March 24, the Kent School Student Government Association hosted a fundraiser in support of Kids for Peace. The Kids for Peace effort, “Love for Ukraine” sends funds directly to Ukrainian mothers seeking refuge in Poland. Kent School was made aware of the global community service project through their relationship with Harvard University’s Department of Education program, Making Caring Common.
Three KCHS students make All-Shore Honors Chorus
Kent County High School students, from left, Aaron Saunders, Corrina Boyd and Lorelei Patillo performed in the All-Shore Honors Chorus Friday, April 8 at North Dorchester High School in Hurlock. They were selected by audition from more than 200 Eastern Shore 200 students who sought a spot in the All-Shore Honors Chorus.
New drums add to elementary music program
The beat is the building block of music and a new set of drums is helping students build their own musical foundations. Thanks to a fine arts grant from the Maryland State Department of Education, Kent County Public Schools elementary music teacher Jodi Bortz received the new drums last month for students.
ShoreRivers Awarded Grants for Wetland Restoration Projects and Streams Assessment
This spring, ShoreRivers will be designing wetland restoration projects located on three different farms in the Chester River watershed, and will assess stream restoration opportunities throughout its region on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This work is made possible through four grants from Chesapeake Bay Trust totaling more than $321,000, and will result in significant reductions of nutrient and sediment pollution to our waterways.
