The Garfield Center Opens Kurt Vonnegut’s “Happy Birthday, Wanda June” August 9th
Wanda June was run over by an Ice Cream Truck. Now residing in Heaven, she hangs out with an assortment of odd and interesting characters who, along with Wanda June herself, have a connection to a big game hunter and war hero named Harold Ryan. Ryan has been missing for several years in the Amazon rainforest with his adventurous friend Colonel Looseleaf Harper, a slow-witted aviation hero who had the unhappy task of dropping the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Wanda’s only connection to Ryan is that her birthday cake, which colorfully displays the words “Happy Birthday, Wanda June” and was ordered before her vehicular demise, was purchased at a discount by one of two men who are in romantic pursuit of Ryan’s wife, Penelope. The cake is meant to help celebrate the birthday party for her long-missing and presumed-dead husband. Things get very complicated, however, when Harold suddenly reappears on the verge of his legal declaration of death. The play is dark and wildly funny. It contains mature themes and language.

Heat Doesn’t Keep Chick-fil-A Out of the Kitchen
When Rebuilding Together Kent County’s Executive Director, Genevieve Croker, first got a call from Chick-fil-A Regional Facilities Manager, Kevin Hiden, she wasn’t sure whether she’d be able to accommodate their volunteer group. Kevin, who has a home near Rock Hall, had been chatting with a local friend, Cathy, about his company’s commitment to giving back and wondering if there was a nearby nonprofit that could be a good fit. Cathy immediately thought of Rebuilding and their work to ensure more of our neighbors live in safe and healthy homes. She put Kevin in touch with Genevieve and after several conversations, they found the perfect project for their volunteers: clearing out a home for a senior in MIllington!
KCHS Student Shows Generosity of Spirit
Kent County High School student Bryce Jacobs has made quite the splash in Rock Hall this summer. In June, Jacobs participated in the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company's third annual Guardian of the Pearl Rockfish Tournament June 7-9. This was Jacobs' last year of eligibility in the youth category and what better way to celebrate than to place third and win $1,530. Jacobs fished aboard SeaDux with Capt. Brian Councell during the tournament and reeled in a 4.8-pound catch. During the awards ceremony, Jacobs donated his winnings back to the fire company in support of its new ambulance, which made its community debut at the tournament.
