Shore Legal Access recently welcomed Amber C. Green as the Life Planning Case Manager/Community Outreach Coordinator for the Lower Shore. Green is based at the non-profit legal aid organization’s Salisbury office, where she serves the communities of Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties.

Kent County Middle School teacher Kaitlyn Wright is among seven finalists announced for the Maryland Teacher of the Year. Wright, who teaches English and leads the drama program at the middle school, was named Kent County Public Schools Teacher of the Year last spring. 

The YMCA of the Chesapeake will host a membership drive throughout the month of September and waive the $75 joining fee at all of its eleven locations on the Eastern Shore.

The newest — and youngest — member of the Kent County Board of Education officially took her seat at the meeting table earlier this month. Alden Swanson is a rising junior at Kent County High School and this year’s student member of the Board of Education.

County councils in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent and Queen Anne’s recently presented proclamations to University of Maryland Shore Regional Health’s (UM SRH) Stroke Committee. These proclamations designated these counties as “Stroke Smart” counties. Talbot County issued a proclamation in May 2024. UM SRH is a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).

On August 18th, ten YMCA team members from across the Eastern Shore were certified by YUSA to coach two of the YMCA of the Chesapeake’s signature Chronic Disease & Prevention Programs – EnhanceFitness® and LiveSTRONG at their respective branches. These new coaches will facilitate the expansion of these critical programs to more Y branches across the Delmarva Peninsula. 

Approximately 1700 guests attended the For All Seasons 2024 Back-to-School Supplies Giveaway and Resource Expo in Idlewild Park – a record attendance for the event. For All Seasons distributed 800 backpacks filled with materials to local students.

Returning to school after a long summer break can be a stressful time for students, whether it's a child’s first day of kindergarten, a transition to middle or high school, or just the end of the freedoms of summer. It's normal for children to feel anxious about these changes. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recommends the following to help ease children’s worries as they transition back to school.

Kent County Public Schools will be holding another session of its commercial driver’s license (CDL) permit training program this fall for those interested in becoming bus drivers.

Compass will be offering their three-day training session for any individuals interested in becoming a patient care volunteer. The training session is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. October 4, 11, and 18th. The training will be held at our Barnette Center's Conference room located at 255 Comet Dr. Centreville, MD 21617.
