Mary Wakefield of Crownsville, Maryland, has been appointed Vice President of Water Resources at Earth Data, Inc. in Centreville, Maryland. In her new role, Wakefield oversees Earth Data’s field operations team, scheduling and permitting, writing and reviewing proposals, developing team processes and procedures, and managing budgets.

Kent School’s 2024 Kudner Leyon Visiting Writers are Cara Natterson, MD and Vanessa Kroll Bennett. Natterson and Bennett are the authors of This is so Awkward: Modern Puberty Explained. The bestselling book is described as “Eye-opening and reassuring, This Is So Awkward will help adults understand the turbulent pubescent decade and become confident guides for today’s kids.” The author/experts will visit Kent School on Tuesday, October 15. There will be a student workshop during the academic day. Later that afternoon Natterson and Bennett will lead a parent meeting at Kent Cultural Alliance in Chestertown. The parent meeting begins at 4:00 p.m. and is open to the public. There is no fee to attend.

The Maryland Capital Enterprises (MCE) Women’s  Business Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women entrepreneurs, invites the community to join us for a special Halloween-themed Cash Bingo night on October 30th at the Salisbury Elks Lodge #817. 

On Wednesday, October 9, Kent School will host the annual Secondary School Fair for students in Grades Six, Seven and Eight and their parents or guardians. Kent School’s Secondary School Fair is open to all families in the area and there is no fee to attend. The event will be held in the M. V. “Mike” Williams Gymnasium (or outside on our riverside field weather permitting) from 

4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. To date, twenty-four schools are registered to attend including several independent, parochial, and area public schools, both day and boarding schools.

Shore Legal Access recently welcomed Amber C. Green as the Life Planning Case Manager/Community Outreach Coordinator for the Lower Shore. Green is based at the non-profit legal aid organization’s Salisbury office, where she serves the communities of Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties.

Kent County Middle School teacher Kaitlyn Wright is among seven finalists announced for the Maryland Teacher of the Year. Wright, who teaches English and leads the drama program at the middle school, was named Kent County Public Schools Teacher of the Year last spring. 

The YMCA of the Chesapeake will host a membership drive throughout the month of September and waive the $75 joining fee at all of its eleven locations on the Eastern Shore.

The newest — and youngest — member of the Kent County Board of Education officially took her seat at the meeting table earlier this month. Alden Swanson is a rising junior at Kent County High School and this year’s student member of the Board of Education.

County councils in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent and Queen Anne’s recently presented proclamations to University of Maryland Shore Regional Health’s (UM SRH) Stroke Committee. These proclamations designated these counties as “Stroke Smart” counties. Talbot County issued a proclamation in May 2024. UM SRH is a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).

On August 18th, ten YMCA team members from across the Eastern Shore were certified by YUSA to coach two of the YMCA of the Chesapeake’s signature Chronic Disease & Prevention Programs – EnhanceFitness® and LiveSTRONG at their respective branches. These new coaches will facilitate the expansion of these critical programs to more Y branches across the Delmarva Peninsula.
