The student musicians of the Kent County Middle School Trojan Band Program showed their prowess last month, receiving top ratings at a music festival.
Under the direction of teacher Troy Stupart, the middle school band performed Friday, May 19 at the Six Flags America Music Festival in Upper Marlboro.
Both the sixth-grade Rising Trojan Band and the Trojan Concert Band. comprising seventh and eighth graders, received Superior Ratings from the judges, demonstrating their skill and dedication.
"This impressive achievement not only showcased the incredible talent and hard work of these young musicians, but also reaffirmed the exceptional quality of the Trojan Band Program," Stupart said.
The Rising Trojan Band, achieved an average score of 97 — the highest score of all the participating ensembles at the festival. The performance by the Trojan Concert Band earned a Superior Rating from the judges.
"The Kent County Middle School community is thrilled and proud of the Trojan Band Program's significant accomplishments at the Six Flags America Music Festival," Stupart said. "As a result of their astonishing success, the Trojan Band Program continues to garner recognition and inspire a love for music in the community."
In addition, the Kent County Middle School Trojan Trio earned high marks from judges at the Maryland Music Educators Association State Solo and Ensemble Festival held this spring.
Comprising Alexander Harris on flute, Bjorn Birkmire on trombone and Noelle Demby on snare drum, the Trojan Trio received an Excellent rating for their performance of Bruce Pearson's arrangement of "Amazing Grace."
"Everyone was well prepared," the judges wrote. "All three instruments utilized effective techniques."
