Kent Attainable Housing Project Advances in Congress

Kent Attainable Housing is pleased to announce that our 2025 request for Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) for the “Kent County Affordable Housing” project has been submitted to the Appropriations Committee, thanks to the support of Senator Ben Cardin and Senator Chris Van Hollen. The senators recognized the project's importance to Maryland and affirmed that it represents a responsible and impactful use of federal taxpayer funds.

Project Name: Kent County Affordable Housing
Applicant: Kent Attainable Housing, Inc.
Project Purpose: Funds will support the construction of new affordable housing for hardworking limited-income families with incomes between 30% and 80% of the Area Median Income.
Project Location: Kent County
Amount Requested: $2,291,300

This initiative is a significant step in our mission to provide affordable housing solutions for Kent County residents. The project aims to improve and promote affordable housing development in Kent County, Maryland, specifically in Chestertown's Prospect Street Neighborhood, Butlertown, Millington, Kennedyville, and Rock Hall. This initiative targets the rehabilitation and construction of single-family homes, removal of blight, and community planning to provide affordable housing options for hardworking, limited-income families and to enhance the livability and economic vitality of these neighborhoods.

"The submission of our request to the Appropriations Committee is a key funding milestone for addressing affordable housing needs in Kent County," said Kate Van Name, Executive Director of Kent Attainable Housing. "High housing costs are a huge challenge for potential homeowners nationwide. Many potential homebuyers are priced out of the market by high prices and interest rates. However, with careful financial planning, debt management, and credit repair paired with increased affordable single-family construction, we can begin to lift Kent County families out of this crisis. We look forward to this project's positive impact on our community."

The next stage involves a thorough review by the Appropriations Committee, which will audit the details of all submitted requests and determine eligibility and funding decisions. The Committee will publish the list of projects included in the draft bills ahead of their scheduled mark-ups. Kent Attainable Housing will receive further notification once the Committee's review is complete.

"We are committed to ensuring that our families in Kent County have access to affordable housing," said Taylor Frey, Chairman of the Board for Kent Attainable Housing. "This project is a testament to the power of community support and collaboration, and we are thankful for the ongoing backing from our local partners and leaders."

We sincerely thank Senators Cardin and Van Hollen for their unwavering support and dedication to advancing affordable housing on the Eastern Shore, particularly in Kent County. We would also like to thank the community organizations that provided us with Letters of Support for our application:

  • Kent County Office of the County Commissioners

  • The Town of Chestertown

  • Kent County Chamber of Commerce

  • United Way of Kent County, Maryland
