Kent County Commissioners announce the retirement of Pat Merritt, the County’s longtime Chief Financial Officer, who will conclude her distinguished career on July 1, 2026. Her retirement marks the end of more than 30 years of dedicated service, having joined the County on July 17, 1995.
Merritt began her career with the County as the Director of Budget and Accounting, a role she held from her hiring in 1995 through 2006. Her strong leadership, deep financial knowledge, and commitment to professionalism led to her appointment in 2006 as the County’s Chief Financial Officer, a position in which she has served with distinction for two decades.
Throughout her tenure, Merritt has been a trusted advisor to the Board of County Commissioners and a valued member of the senior leadership team. She led the County’s annual budget process for decades, helping the Commissioners navigate lean financial years, manage multi-year capital initiatives, and prioritize complex capital projects. Her steady guidance and analytical skills have been instrumental in maintaining the County’s fiscal stability and supporting responsible long-term planning.
Merritt is also widely recognized for building and mentoring a first-class team of budget and finance professionals. Her leadership fostered a culture of accuracy, accountability, and excellence that will continue to benefit the County well in the future.
“Pat Merritt has served our County as the Director of Finance and has always performed her duties in a commendable manner,” said Commissioner Price. “She served with honesty and integrity throughout her tenure, and I am proud to call her a friend. I wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”
Commissioner Fithian, who was elected just six months before Merritt joined the County, also reflected on her service. “I have looked up to Pat from the very beginning,” he said. “She gives straight answers; she is a pillar of our operation, and she has been someone whose guidance I deeply value. No matter what the question or the hour, she is always available and always prepared. Her leadership has strengthened this County in ways that will be felt for years to come.”
Commissioner Nickerson, who has worked alongside Merritt for the past three and a half years, also expressed his appreciation. “I want to thank Pat for her steadfast commitment to the County,” he said. “Her dedication to being fiscally responsible with taxpayers’ dollars has guided every budget discussion we have had. Her work ethic reflects a deep respect for the community we serve, and I am grateful for her steady and thoughtful leadership.”
The County extends its sincere appreciation to Merritt for her extraordinary service, her unwavering professionalism, and her lasting contributions to the community.
