Miles Hubbert, a Fourth Grade student at Kent School in Chestertown will be competing in the National Scripps Spelling Bee. Preliminary rounds begin Tuesday, May 31 at 9:00 a.m. Nancy Mugele, Head of Kent School said, “The entire Kent School community will be rooting for Speller #37, Miles, through each stage of the competition. We might even spend part of our academic morning streaming the competition here at school!”

According to the Scripps Spelling Bee website, “This year, 234 spellers in Grades 4-8 earned their spots as national competitors by advancing through regional bees, competing against students representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Department of Defense Schools in Europe. Spellers will also represent four countries outside the U.S.: the Bahamas, Canada, Germany and Ghana.”Preliminary rounds may be streamed through ION or Bounce+. The final round will be broadcast live in primetime in ION on Thursday, June 2 at 8:00 p.m.

In addition to having the Kent School community as his own cheering squad, Miles was recently interviewed by WMAR2 News for a segment that aired on local Baltimore stations in the evening news on Wednesday, May 25. In the clip, Miles spoke of some important techniques that help him stay calm and concentrate when he competes. For one, he won’t be wearing his glasses so that he does not get distracted by the crowd. He will be thinking through the word before he spells it. Hubbert says his expectations are realistic. “I don’t expect to make it past the first round but if I do that will be great. I’ll just try my best and that will be good enough for me.” Follow this link to see the full segment.

Mugele continued, “I am so proud of Miles and I know his teachers and classmates are, too. It is rare for a Fourth Grade student to make it this far in the Scripps Bee so no matter the outcome, we know Miles will have future opportunities to compete and we look forward to supporting him. Miles will do an extraordinary job of representing himself and Kent School. We hope he has fun in the process.”
