Meghan Ferster will be joining the Kent School employee group as a full time teacher in Lower School. Meghan will be teaching Science as well as Spanish in Kindergarten through Grade Four. Meghan comes to Kent School uniquely qualified for both roles through her previous experiences as a student in Nicaragua and Ecuador where she fell in love with the language after years of studying Spanish in her educational career. Coupled with her love of and expertise in Spanish, Meghan is passionate about environmental science and has extensive experience teaching environmental science at Echo Hill School.
In her letter of interest Meghan said, “One of my formative teaching experiences happened while I was working at Stratford Hall (a historic house museum). I lived on the beautiful grounds in an old barn, and had just started reading Richard Louv’s Last Child in the Woods. A group of students was visiting from Wisconsin and we were studying how humans used landscapes at different times throughout history. As the students spent their days unearthing and interpreting fossils, tools, and trails, I found that everything I was reading in Louv’s book was happening before my eyes – the students came alive outside. Their curiosity and focus awakened in a tangible, living learning environment and they felt empowered to wonder and explore. It changed my life, and crystallized for me something I see echoed in the Kent School mission – children excel when nurtured and challenged in a space where they belong, a space that puts the student at the center of learning, and fosters her potential for excellence - not just in academics, but as a whole person and a responsible citizen.”
Ferster was most recently a private pod teacher during COVID. Prior to COVID she was the Director of Development at the Garfield Center for the Arts. Meghan has taught, and directed the after school program, at St. Anne’s Episcopal School in Middletown, DE. Meghan was described by former colleagues as “contagiously positive” and was commended for the way she connects with students and coworkers.
