A fierce cross-county rivalry played out on the hardwood of Queen Anne’s County High School on Saturday, October 25th, as the Sheriffs’ Departments from Queen Anne’s County and Kent County came together for a cause. The inaugural game, dubbed the “Safe Homes Showdown,” was played to benefit Rebuilding Together Eastern Shore and culminated in victory for the host Queen Anne’s squad, claiming the first annual Rebuilding Together Eastern Shore Safe Homes Trophy.

A Spirited and Contested Game

Tipoff at 4:00 PM marked the start of a highly spirited and hotly contested back-and-forth game. While the competition was fierce, the good-natured camaraderie between the departments was on full display throughout the afternoon with Queen Anne's Commissioner Phil Dumenil, as the head referee, using his skill to keep the game in control.

The victory, however, was not without controversy. Kent County Sheriff Dennis Hickman filed a lighthearted protest following the final buzzer, alleging that the Queen Anne’s squad had an unfair advantage with a police department “ringer” on their roster. When Ex-Kent Sheriff and current Commissioner, John Price, left the arena, fans swear they heard him vowing, “next year!”

Supporting Safe and Healthy Homes

The family-friendly event served a greater purpose, raising funds and awareness for Rebuilding Together Eastern Shore’s critical work ensuring income-eligible neighbors in both Queen Anne’s and Kent Counties can live in safe and healthy homes.

The crowd was kept entertained by State’s Attorney for Queen Anne’s County, Lance Richardson, who served as the event announcer. Several fans also came away with prizes from a successful raffle and a halftime foul-shooting contest. Sandwiches from Bark Barbeque rounded out the afternoon, a special treat for players and attendees!
