Rep. Harris Announces Rural Development Grants to Upper Shore

SUBMITTED BY WALTER SMOLOSKI | U.S. CONGRESSMAN ANDY HARRIS

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) announced the award of two U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development grants to the upper shore, totaling more than $120,000.  Specifically, Talkie Rural Broadband in Chestertown has been awarded $94,000 to fund the installation of fiber infrastructure to allow high-speed internet access for the Main Street vicinity in downtown Chestertown.  Additionally, Queen Anne’s County has been awarded $30,000 to identify and analyze business opportunities that will result in economic development in the region. The County’s Economic and Tourism Development Commission will be collaborating with private, public and non-profit sectors to pursue economically and environmentally sustainable and balanced growth opportunities for business, tourism, and agriculture.

Congressman Harris issued the following statement:

“Our Main Street Maryland communities have been devastated by this pandemic.  As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I applaud the award of these funds to the Mid-Shore.  These grants will allow us to further economic development and support jobs in regions and sectors so devastated by the Coronavirus.  I remain committed to helping our local businesses come back from this crisis by getting them the resources they need to stay afloat and once again thrive.”
