Kent County High School's winter athletes were congratulated by the Kent County Board of Education last month for their outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom.
The Kent County Board of Education celebrated the outstanding achievements of the high school's student athletes in winter sports earlier this spring.
At the Board's monthly meeting in April, Kent County High School Principal Kris Hemstetter shared highlights from the season, including state and regional championships.
"What makes this group especially remarkable is not just what they have accomplished on the field, mat, track or in the pool — but how they have accomplished it," Hemstetter said. "These students are scholars and leaders."
Scottie Ford completed an undefeated regular season run on the wrestling team. He placed fourth in the state tournament, wrestling at 165 pounds. He finished the season as a region and Bayside Conference champion and earned his membership in the 100-Win Club.
Tye Bellarin is a Maryland state champion in wrestling at 132 pounds, as well as a regional champion and conference runner-up.
"Reaching the top of the podium at the state level is an extraordinary accomplishment," Hemstetter said, congratulating Bellarin.
Talicia Wright, Jane Cleary and Aliyah Waits all earned Honorable Mention All Bayside North in women’s basketball, demonstrating strong leadership and teamwork.
In swimming, Mary Jane Joiner broke a 25-year-old school record in the 100-meter butterfly, which Hemstetter said was "an incredible and historic achievement."
Tucker Ervin won a regional championship across 1A, 2A and 3A in the 100 freestyle.
Keyare Hawkinsn is a regional champion in indoor track and placed second in the state for shot put.
Exchange student Pacome Mennetrier took home second in the region in the 800 meters in indoor track and was 10th in the state.
"As a student from France, he represents both global connection and Trojan pride," Hemstetter said.
Hemstetter congratulated all the athletes for their accomplishments on and off the field.
"We are incredibly proud of you — not just for your achievements, but for the way you represent Kent County High School," she said.
