The Kent County Board of Education recognized athletes from three different fall sports Monday, Dec. 8 for their accomplishments this past season.
Director of Human Resources Dan Hushion, who also serves as the athletics supervisor, and Kent County High School Principal Kris Hemstetter led the celebration.
"We have a number of our outstanding student athletes from up at the high school, as well as their coaches, who we would love to celebrate and honor for their achievements during the fall 2025 season," Hushion said.
Quinten Joiner won Kent County High School's first-ever state golf championship this season, under the coaching of teacher Jonathan Fitch.
"His hard work, humility and love for the game have made a last an impression on our school and community," Hemstetter said of Joiner.
The next group of athletes to be recognized were members of the girls cross country team: Janey Depp, Alden Swanson, Sophie Cousineau, Devon Wiggins, McKenzie Smith, Sydney Bortz, Jordana Capp and Maggie Bilbrough.
The team won the regional title in cross country this year. It was also the first year they competed as a team in the state championship.
Depp earned the highest place ever for a female runner from Kent County High School in the state championship, medaling as a top 15 finisher. She also came in second place in the regional championship.
"Her grit, consistency and team leadership made a powerful impact on our cross country program," Hemstetter said of Depp.
Coach Patrick McColigan was on hand for the Dec. 8 celebration with runners Swanson, also the student member of the Board of Education, and Cousineau.
"We also want to shout out the boys (cross country) team, who returned to states for the first time since 2017," Hemstetter said.
The field hockey team received their certificates for winning the regional title this fall under head coach Susie Taylor Wright and volunteer assistant coach Trish McGee, who also serves as president of the Board of Education.
Hemstetter said seniors Tess Fuchs, Grace Gerstung and McKenna Messick led the team with courage and unity.
The Board recognized all field hockey team members including Nevaeh Blackiston, Aiyanna Copper, Keelyn Clayton, Jane Cleary, Mackensie Egolf, Abigail Gallo, Catherine Gerstung, Grace Gston, Eliza Loller, Audrey Manning, McKenna, Abigail Parr, Taylor Strong, Mali Wirth and manager Abigail Strayer.
"They played one of the most challenging schedules in the state and they never gave up," Hemstetter said of the team.
