The Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) has declared a severe blood shortage and is asking people across the region to donate blood to help replenish blood supplies. The UM Chester River Health Foundation (CRHF), a Kent County based affiliate of University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, is answering the call by holding a blood drive on Friday, August 25, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown Conference Center.
New Administration at KCMS
There has been a change of leadership at Kent County Middle School this summer, with Mark Buckel being named principal. Buckel, who has been with Kent County Public Schools for 17 years, will be joined at the middle school by the new assistant principal, Kelley Melvin. Buckel's management of the CTE program has been handed to Tom Porter.
UM Shore Regional Health to Offer “Don’t Worry, Be Healthy” Course
University of Maryland Shore Regional Health is launching an in-person five-session workshop titled “Don’t Worry, Be Healthy,” designed to teach participants how to stay healthy by making healthier and safer choices. The class will be offered once per month, in-person at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown, 100 Brown Street, from 1 to 3 p.m., beginning Friday, July 28, with sessions running through November. There is no charge for the course, but registration is required.
Bayside Conference Opens Dual Sports Opportunity
Starting this fall, Kent County High School's student athletes will have expanded opportunities to play sports. The Bayside Athletic Conference, which includes Kent County Public Schools, is allowing students to play two sports in one season. Students will be allowed to declare a primary sport and a secondary sport during each of the three athletic seasons on the school calendar.

Governor Moore Announces Seven New and Redesignated Enterprise Zones
Governor Wes Moore today announced that the Maryland Department of Commerce has approved three new Enterprise Zones – Woodlawn in Baltimore County; the towns of Betterton and Worton in Kent County; and the town of Snow Hill in Worcester County. The department also approved the redesignation and expansion of an existing zone in the town of Princess Anne, and has approved the redesignation of existing zones in Baltimore County’s Southwest area, Cecil County, and the City of Cambridge in Dorchester County.

On June 27, 2023, the UM Chester River Health Foundation sponsored a “make-your-own-sundae” event to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated courtyard at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown, which includes a new pavilion and outdoor furniture. In attendance were team members, Foundation board members, and donors; music was provided by DJ Pres Jacobs.
Benedictine School Receives NCASES Accreditation
The Benedictine School is one of only 22 nationwide to earn accreditation from the National Commission for Accreditation of Special Education Services (NCASES) for its school program. This is the second time Benedictine has earned this accreditation; the first was in 2017. The accreditation process is based on a study of compliance to fifty standards covering process, procedures, and practices critical to the functioning of a special education setting. It also includes a comprehensive site-review performed by a team of special education experts.
