Kent County Public Schools started the fall off celebrating those staff members who reached career milestones and the Teacher of the Year. In the days before the school year officially started, staff joined together in the Kent County High School auditorium for a Length of Service Awards presentation.

The Sultana Education Foundation invites the public to the ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Lawrence Wetlands Preserve on Tuesday, October 17th at 11:00 am. There will be a short dedication with brief remarks by Sultana President Drew McMullen, state Senator Stephen Hershey, state Delegate Jay Jacobs, National Park Service Planning and Development Manager Bob Campbell, and Kent County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Couch. The ceremony will be followed by refreshments at the Preserve’s recently completed Harwood Nature Center and attendees will have an opportunity to walk the property.

On Tuesday, November 28th, Mid-Shore Community Foundation will host Mid-Shore Gives 2023, the 24-hour fundraising event to benefit local nonprofits.

Taylor Goodall, Kent School Class of 1995 and President of Dixon Group, delivered keynote remarks Friday night at the unveiling of a $1 million effort to fund construction of a new Middle School Innovation Center at the independent school at the end of Wilkins Lane on the bank of the Chester River.  

Nineteen years ago, Rebuilding Together Kent County (RTKC) was formed by caring residents who wanted to help neighbors whose homes were devastated by Hurricane Isabel. From the very beginning, the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown supported this fledgling nonprofit, offering vital financial support, providing volunteers from its congregation, and providing a free office space for organizational records and administrative team members. 

Parents have been greeted this past month by new teachers and staff members in Kent County Public Schools. In all, there are more than 20 new teachers and staff members in the school system in subjects ranging from math and science to music and band.

McCall “Mickey” Breuer, CNM, WHNP-BC, recently joined UM Shore Medical Group – Women’s Health. Formerly a provider with WomanWise Midwifery in Blue Bell, Pa., her midwifery experience includes providing general benign gynecology, prenatal, OB triage, contraceptive and intrapartum and postpartum care. In outpatient and inpatient settings, she has managed patients with gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes.

The lilting chorus of Cuban folk song "Guantanamera" filled the cafeteria of H.H. Garnet Elementary School in Chestertown Thursday, Sept. 21. Local resident and artist Fredy Granillo strummed his guitar as he taught the song to students that morning as part of the Celebración del mes del la Herencia Hispana in the county. The Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month was brought into schools during September through partnerships with the Kent County Local Management Board and the Kent Cultural Alliance.
